Opening (problematic) Videos with VLC Player

Every now and then, you may come across a video file that won’t open correctly on your Mac, with the most common error being a message about an unrecognized file format.  In order to open these videos, especially .wmv files that OSX 10.7 is unable to open natively, you need to install a simple, free program called VLC Player.  The screencast below guides you through the process of downloading and installing VLC player, and shows you how to open movies with the application and how to set VLC player as your default application for opening certain types of movies.
